Order Your Steps is coming up on our 5th anniversary in September and it continues to be a very fascinating & enlightening, yet challenging journey.  We have visited with more than 100 clients at various stages of their lives.  Most of our clients have very hectic schedules and/or “retired” with very hectic schedules.

So, as professional organizers, how do we customize the process of getting organized, just for you?  Each person is soooo VERY different.  Thus, our Challenge, to understand just how much time and money are you willing to invest?

We often know what we want, but we are not always sure what it might take to get there….

Organizing Process Customization Requirements

1. We can’t do it without you!

In order for an organizing project to be successful, you must be TOTALLY engaged in the process and willing to make decisions quickly.  If you are really not sure if you want to give it away, keep it and move on.  

We now make sure that we take breaks periodically and drink plenty of water.

Music also helps too!

2. It’s going to take TIME !                                        “Rome was definitely not built in a day!”

In my experience, thus far, clients are willing to invest, on the average about 6 hours!

We can get A LOT done is 6 hours, however, the pace must be fast and smooth.  I must admit that my pace is a lot faster than most!  🙂  … Working through the entire organizing process; to sort, purge and organize, is not always easy, I just happen to love it!

3. We both must have Realistic Expectations!  “We can’t eat the elephant!

Oftentimes, we expect miraculous results in a day, when in actually, it took months, maybe if years to accummulate the clutter that needs to be eliminated.  We must break it down into bite-size pieces.

We will divide the project into phases and prioritize the areas that are most important to you.  For large jobs, we will usually spend the first session or two, pre-sorting into various categories, which makes the purging process a whole lot easier.

4. It’s going to take a financial investment!

I’m currently working with a client whose project started in December. When we first met, there was a sense of mild desperation in her voice.  She was just frustration with the clutter in her home and the disorder in her life.  We initially focused on her bedroom suite and then on to her office.  We have worked together for only 8 hrs., just once a month, but she has been fully engaged in the process.  We have completed her master walk-in closet, dresser & dresser drawers, under the bed, sitting room with bookcase and bathroom!

She has a very hectic work schedule, so she has not been able to do homework assignments.  However, she has maintained her space and now her teenage children have noticed that she spends a LOT more time in her bedroom sanctuary in Peace and Serenity.

The Ramblings of a Professional Organizer ….

Garfield“I’m too busy to get organized!”  REALLY?!?!? ……That’s makes absolutely NO sense!  OK, I need to calm down… BUT, people just don’t understand that if we would take the time to get organized and put some semblance of Order into our lives, then we would have more time to enjoy what’s really important in life!

Let me explain… It is my true belief that disorder & clutter has a psychological effect on our productivity, stress level and overall state of mind.  As we enter another new year, things are hectic (as usual) and sort of out of control (again!).  Therefore, some of my clients are simply TOO BUSY for our organizing sessions and have postponed, in some cases, until the Spring …. which is kinda ok, IF we resume in Spring.  It is so frustrating for me, because I have seen their spaces and I know that if we could just get to Ordered Chaos, their lives would be so much better.

We must ask the questions, Are we just TOO busy to take a moment to breathe, Too busy to spend quality time with the ones we love or Is everyone on the run all the time?? Ultimately, life is too short and time is too precious to let it pass us by.  All I am asking is that we come out of the forest and see the trees …

For us to say that we are TOO busy to organize, is an oxymoron.  “What will it truly take to get our house in Order?”  Don’t try to eat the elephant, we can only take one small bite at a time…. the papers on the dining room table, our home office with files stacked high, the kids’ closet, the daily morning routine, family mealtime after work, or even finding quiet time (what’s that?!?!?)

Well, my moment of frustration has passed.  It means so much to me to help you to get there(?), whereever your Order is. It’s so logical to me.  I see it so clearly in my mind’s eye.  But I know that it is not an easy task.  It is extremely difficult to convey the concept of Divine Order to those that are in chaos.  But I will NOT give up!  I will continue to chip away at the clutter and disorder, one life at a time.  It is just that important to me. It is my mission, it is my calling.  So, March, April, and even May will get here soon enough….and hopefully, by then, at the very least, we will be able to see the trees!

I don’t have time!!!!

Have you ever been in the position, where you see  something SO clearly, but very few, if anyone see things the same way you do??

As a professional organizer, I see that people really need my help.  I know in my heart that clutter creates chaos and chaos disturbs the divine order that life should have.  I believe that people understand this, but they CAN’T see it…. THEY JUST DON’T HAVE THE TIME!

I know, I sound like a broken record.  BUT I see it SOOOOOOO clearly!!!  Many of us are in a vicious cycle of Chaos, a state of utter confusion!  Get Up (still ragged out from the day before), Eat (if you have time), Get dressed (if you can find the mate to that shoe or find the pair of socks that match)!

Get the kids ready, Get the kids to school, Go to work, pick up the kids, get dinner, get ready for bed, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe the person that I just described is the exception, NOT the rule. But the folks who realize that they could use some help and call me, they still just don’t have time!!  They are not enough hours in the day…  Can anyone relate?  So where will the time come from???

Organizing Tip for Today!

Another aspect of personal organizing is “Time Management”…  No, I can’t give you more hours in the day, nor can I make the work go away… But by modifying your work process, re-organizing your office or workspace, may allow you to be more effective and less stressed! … You may be surprised to find that you have a little “extra” time to just sit back and breathe….

Maybe a little TOO clean, but you get my point! (NWI.COM)
