Organizing Tip for Today!

Happy Monday!  So sorry for the lateness of my post…  I anticipate my work schedule becoming a little busier.  I have added “Designer” for ShelfGenie Glide-out shelving to my portfolio, so I am scheduling appointments for that as well.  Busy is a very good thing for someone with a new business…

Now, for the important stuff!  One of the simply ways to begin organizing is to start a “To Do” list. It only takes a few items and can be done in a few minutes. Now the key is once we write the items down and we have to plan to do the things on the list.  When I was still at Xerox, almost everyone, at every level of management, had a spiral notebook and as you accomplished your task, you would check it off the list … but never tear the page out of the book… Think about it!!  We would always have a running list of what was done, when it was done and what else needed to be done.  Even today, in the world of technology, your spiral notebook may be your task list in microsoft office, OneNote, etc., but it serves the same purpose… to help us to outline the things that we have to get done and hopefully, will help us to develop a plan “to do”them.

Organizing Tip for Today!

The one thing that really bothers me is plastic containers. Although they are a necessity, they always look cluttered in the cabinet. The first thing that I would suggest is that you go through all your plastic containers and match them with the lid. If you can’t find the lid, then throw it away.

Organizing Tip for Today!

It is always a good idea to sort your mail when you take it out of the mailbox.

Throw the junk mail away first, but don’t forget to have a shred-only pile for all of those credit card offers….

Have a place designated to put mail that needs your attention and/or additional action is required.

Please don’t allow your mail to just continue to accumulate.  The piles will outrun you very quickly!

What to do with the “Secret” Closet?

Or Not??…. Your secret closet may not be so secret!  🙂

This month, we are going to “Declare Our Independence” from Clutter!!

So, Where to we start??

Sort & Purge

Organize!

Please Stay Tuned for the next episode of “My Son has Reappeared”…

I believe that I have had ANOTHER Revelation?????

Are you REALLY organized?

Do you have a secret closet?  I can not stress enough that being organized, does NOT mean that your house is so neat, that you can’t live in it.  Have you ever been in someone’s house that was soooooo clean that you didn’t want to sit down???  You were even afraid to breathe, cause your breath might leave air particles on the furniture….

Your organized space must be live-able and if it is tooooo organized, yes, I really mean too organized, it will be very difficult to maintain!

That piece of paper is in the yellow folder, with the pink dot, in the green drawer of the purple file cabinet

and it is the third sheet of paper, with the red tab….  ARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

The primary goal of being organized is to have some order to your stuff so that you can find what you need, when you need it.  If you have a secret closet, than you are probably NOT organized, you are just REAL neat….

What is in your car?

When I worked for Xerox, I was a “field” manager, which meant that I spent a lot of time in my car.  Paperwork, employee files, customer info, etc. needed to be easily accessible, while I was in my car.  In addition, eating fast food while I was on the road…. was fast and a part of my daily work process.  So trash could begin to accumulate! Although my car had become my mobile office, remember, I am an organizer and my car still had to stay relatively clean and orderly.

You can believe, my car did not look like this!

Is the Junk in your car Junk?

I read a very interesting article and I attempted to send it to all of my blog followers.  But since I am still somewhat technically-challenged, I am not sure what happened to it (so please let me know if you got it and I apologize if this is a duplicate).

The junk inside your car isn’t exactly ‘junk’……It actually says a lot about you!

What’s in your car? Do you have purple fuzzy dice hanging from your rearview mirror? Or is it cluttered with empty water bottles? Well, according to experts, the junk inside your car isn’t exactly ‘junk’……It actually says a lot about you! So here’s what certain types of car clutter say about your personality……Courtesy of Woman’s World Magazine: • First: What if you have a decoration hanging from your rearview mirror? Psychologist Dr. Maximillian Wachtel says hanging something from your rear-view mirror – like fuzzy dice or a stuffed baseball – is a sign that you’re confident. Why? Because the fact that you’re okay telling the world what appeals to you says you’re comfortable with who you are. • Next: What if your car is cluttered with empty water bottles? Psychologist Dr. Tina Tessina says drinking water in the car shows that you’re efficient. Why? Because even though you’re always on the go, you still stay on top of important things – like keeping yourself hydrated. • Also: What if you keep a first aid kit in your car? Obviously, this means you’re safety conscious. But a first aid kit also indicates you like being in control. Dr. Tessina says your first aid kit makes you feel like no matter what happens, you’ll be able to handle it. • And finally: What if you have an angel in your car or an angel bumper sticker? This is a sign of a positive thinker. Dr. Tessina says people who surround themselves with angels, or other symbols of hope and optimism, expect good things to happen, which makes them more positive and more satisfied with their lives. So what if you have fuzzy dice, water bottles, a first aid kit, and an angel in your car? It means you’re a confident person who’s always on top of things, and is ready to handle any situation with positive thinking. It also means you need to clean out your car!

“Junk in the Trunk” (of your car!)

First, I must let you know, as I also told my Facebook fans, I made the mistake of Googling “Junk in the Trunk”.  There are obviously different meaning for that term.  By the way, I really need to know how the filter out the sexually explicit images from Google Search.  Parents, if you haven’t already, I would strongly suggest you check into it.  I don’t have any young children now, so I am sure that I am WAY late on this one…. Moving right along!

The trunk of car or your car as a whole is no different than a room in your home or office, when it comes to organizing.  You need to know what is in your trunk and be able to put your hand on what you need quickly.  The process of sort, purge and organize still applies.

Clutter is clutter, no matter what part of your life it occupies.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

“Diving Right In” – Phase II (Test the System)

I decided to back-up and re-group and NOT try to name all the phases of organizing.  I will stick with the name that works, “Dive Right In” and not make the process too complicated (no more contests for a while :-()… although I may try to stay with a water theme.

I started small with my project (as we all should) and worked under my bathroom sink.  I had to separate my personal items from my cleaning items.  Fortunately, my bathroom has two (2) sinks, so I didn’t need have to get my husband’s input, but I probably need to know what IS under his sink.

You can buy small organizing tools along the way, like this little basket. But there is no need to buy unnecessary items.

Now if you have the CASH, then GO FOR IT!!!

After the project is complete, we need to develop a road map, NOT literally.  But at least, we should have a general idea of what all the items are in the space.  Take others on a tour of the new “organized” space, so that they know where everything is.

IKEA.COM

Now understand that NO organizing system is cast in stone, it continues to evolve.  A system is meant to continue to improve and become more effective, the more you use it…..

Phase III – What’s Next!

lagwar.com

Now that we have a rhythm going, let’s go to the next space, using the same process.  I am sure that we have made modifications along the way and adjustments based on “Lessons Learned”.  With each new space, the process becomes easier and easier.

Once you have a “basic” organizing system developed, you can just “roll with the flow”

Now this is VERY IMPORTANT, you have to live in the space and things are going to get out of place.  Do NOT create a system that you can’t live with.  Just don’t allow the clutter to build and get out of control.

We need a maintenance process and we need EVERYONE involved, including the kids.
